Nebraska Book Company Golf Tournament Supports Former Employee

Lincoln, Nebraska
Friday, November 18, 2011

The Nebraska Book Company's Second Annual Golf Tournament raised funds for a cause particularly close to participants - one of their own. The company golf tournament held on September 25, 2011 raised $5,000 for the Douglas Hoesli Onward Progress Fund. Over 100 Nebraska Book Company employees and vendor representatives participated in the event that raised funds for a former employee.

Douglas Hoesli Douglas Hoesli was a part time student worker at Nebraska Book Company. He balanced a busy schedule of classes, soccer and his job at Nebraska Book Company. While driving home to visit his family in Kansas on December 23, 2010, he hit an icy stretch of highway outside of Salina and his car lost control. He was 30 minutes from home. Despite wearing a seatbelt, Hoesli suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Following four months at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Hoesli returned to be with his family in Kansas. But he did not leave the hearts and minds of his coworkers at Nebraska Book Company.

Nebraska Book Company coworkers hosted a baked goods sale in March to raise funds for The Douglas Hoesli Onward Progress Fund. It was a natural fit for the company's golf tournament to raise funds for Hoesli as well.

"So many of our employees have supported Douglas on his road to recovery. It seemed like a natural fit to support the Douglas Hoesli Onward Progress Fund through our annual golf tournament. Once we shared the story, our business partners were also generous in donating funds and prizes for the tournament," explains Mark Oppegard, Nebraska Book Company CEO. "We look forward to hearing regular updates from Douglas, and we're pleased our golf tournament supported his fund."

Hoesli plans to return to college. He also has another goal. During his time at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Hoesli found a creative outlet for his competitive spirit when he was introduced to the sport of quad rugby, a contact sport which has similarities to soccer. Hoesli hopes to be playing competitive rugby next year. When that happens, he will have a cheering section from Nebraska Book Company. His former coworkers also plan to find other ways to financially support the Douglas Hoesli Onward Progress Fund.
